Writer Freidman
Is Attacked
Jerusalem (JTA) — Ameri-
7,
can author Robert Fried-
man, who has written
unflattering portraits of
Israel's right wing, was at-
tacked by residents of a West
Bank settlement.
Mr. Friedman and an
escort were reportedly
assaulted by members of the
Kahane Chai movement,
who accused Mr. Friedman
of inciting the murder of
their leader, Rabbi Meir
Kahane, more than two
years ago through his
writings.
Mr. Friedman, author of
books and articles portray-
ing settlers and nationalists
as zealots, was on assign-
ment for the New
Yorker magazine when he
was attacked by five men
armed with pistols at the
West Bank settlement of
Tapuach.
Mr. Friedman and the
escort were unhurt, but their
car tires were slashed. They
were able to get away from
the settlement.
The attack was condemned
by the Government Press Of-
fice director.
