American Flora
Exhibit Opens

The detailed paintings of one of
America's landscape artists will
be the focus of a special Park
West Gallery exhibition open-
ing titled "Joann Rea American
Flora."
Using exact, complex brush-
work — reminiscent of the
French pointillists — Ms. Rea
magnifies the beauty of gardens
and other picturesque land-
scapes. Her work is real in that
her garden always have the cor-
rect types of flowers, trees and
shrubs that would be found in
a particular climate at a par-
ticular time of year.
Ms. Rea also paints with the
flair of Impressionism, captur-
ing the filter of light through a
forest or the way it enhances
the lushness of an azalea in full
bloom. She gives this light a
force of its own, an intense
strength that emerges from her
many strokes.
Ms. Rea's paintings leave
viewers with the sense of seren-
ity or excitement that remains
after a day in a garden or for-
est. She gives the viewer an op-
portunity to be immersed in a
bright lightness of a summer af-
ternoon or in the cool morning
mist of a stream in the woods.
The exhibit will continue
through Feb. 10. Park West
Gallery is located at 19469
Northwestern Highway, just
north of 12 Mile Road in South-
field. Gallery hours are Mon-
day-Wednesday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.;
Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m.-
9 p.m. and Saturday and Sun-
day, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. For
information, call 354-2343.

P.S. A mixed hearing loss involves both sen-
sorineural and conductive losses.

TREATING A CO DUCTIVE LOSS

Of the two broad categories of hearing loss,
sensorineural (nerve deafness) and conduc-
tive, the latter is the least common and the
most correctable. Although it only comprises
about ten percent of all hearing difficulties,
this category includes all problems of the out-
er and middle ear. Such problems as infec-
tions in these parts of the ear can be
successfully treated with antibiotics. Even
scarred or perforated eardrums can be cor-
rected through surgery, as can the common
middle-ear ailment known as otosclerosis.
When medication or surgery offers no
remedy, a hearing instrument may offer a
solution to conductive hearing loss. Because
hearing problems of this type involve ampli-
fication, not distortion, hearing instruments
can usually provide the volume boost nec-
essary for satisfactory results.
