The two soon realized they
could bring another perspective
to Dr. Ginott's theories: practi-
cal experience. Each is the
mother of three; each saw how
challenging it was to put aside
old habits and take up a new
attitude to parenting.
Following Dr. Ginott's rec-
ommendation to praise one's
children, Ms. Mazlish recalls
complimenting— ad nauseam
— her daughter's piano play-
ing. "It's so wonderful! It's beau-
tiful! You're terrific!" she would
say.
"My daughter would tell me,
`Oh, Mom, there you go again,'"
Ms. Mazlish says.
Their own life stories, along
with the child-rearing adven-
tures they heard from other
parents, prompted Ms. Mazlish
and Ms. Faber to write their
first book. It took them five
years.
"So much of it comes from
our own daily experience," Ms.
Mazlish says. "I remember
Adele would call me and say,
`That's it. You won't believe
what (my son) Alex did today.
I'm going to kill him!' and I
would say, 'Don't lose that feel-
ing! Wait until we have a
chance to write it down!"
Their books soon expanded
to audio tapes and workshops,
the latter initially dominated
by men. "Today, about a third
of our audience is men, and we
welcome them," Ms. Mazlish
says.
The women say their ap-
proach to communication ex-
tends beyond parents and
children to adult-adult. Many
couples who attend the work-
shops find their own relation-
ship improves once they rid
their daily dialogue of the typ-
ical "You never" and "You al-
ways," Ms. Faber says.
Though Dr. Ginott appears
to be all but unknown by par-
ents today, the writings of Ms.
Mazlish and Ms. Faber already
have extended well beyond this
country. Their bOoks are for
sale throughout Europe (more
than 100,000 copies of How To
Talk So Kids Will Listen have
sold in Warsaw alone) and are
about to enter the market in
Saudi Arabia. ❑
