chanical skill and time, so
many kit-car purchasers have
their cars assembled by the
manufacturer or at an auto
shop rather than building their
own.
Before purchasing a kit car,
experts suggest doing a lot of
legwork. Visit car-kit shows,
talk to people who bought the
kit in which you're interested,
and check with the Better
Business Bureau for any com-
plaints about the company that
makes it.
Determining the true value
of collectible automobiles is
never an easy task. However,
a variety of specialty publica-
tions are available to aid your
quest by providing specific dol-
lar values geared toward body
type and condition, current
popularity and optional equip-
ment.
Among the best: Standard
Guide to Cars and Prices
Krause Publications of Iola,

Wis.); National Edition of
Andaiy's Official Bluebook of
Classic and Exotic Automobiles
(C & D Publishing of Newport
Beach, Calif.); Old Cars Price
Guide (Krause Publications).
To help potential purchasers
assess the condition of a col-
lectible car for comparison
against cars and prices listed
in such guides, here are tips
from Motor Trend magazine:
*Take along a "numbers
guide" with exact casting num-
bers, production data and oth-
er verifying information. These
may be found at local libraries
or through car clubs. Then use
these numbers to check the
contents of the engine com-
partment for authenticity.
*Ask for paperwork accom-
panying the vehicle that might
help document its past, such as
the original bill of sale, service
bills or original factory infor-
mation.
*Inspect the entire automo-
bile, including the undercar-
riage, for evidence of past
damage or improper repairs.
View the car in natural sun-
light for clearest vision. Lift in-
terior mats and carpet to check
for rust.
*Take a test drive to monitor
the car's tracking, engine re-
sponse, interior features, etc.L1
