He is quite the salesmen as he quickly points out that Ha- chette's magazines all are print- ed on high quality paper, have bold graphics and make a qual- ity statement. "We live and die by our products," he said. In a time when prints seems to be lost in a sea of electronic media, Mr. Pecker offers an op- timistic perspective. "I think it will broaden the base of print," he said referring to American Online and the expanding op- portunities on cable television. "I think it will expand the uni- verse, not decrease it." Hachette's forays into custom publishing have exceeded his expectations. He said the joint venture with GM in Know-How magazine has been very suc- i [ c cessful. In 1994, Hachette plans to Sun produce magazine for Bausch and Lomb with the • Arnell Group. "I .. think that as new ,, magazines are - launched, this is the way it's going to be done," he said. Perhaps, Mr. Pecker's business savvy began with his first automotive ven- ture — financing his college ed- ucation working as a car wholesaler in New York. Mr. Pecker has a degree from Pace University in New York. He grew up in the Bronx and be- gan his career as a senior au- ditor at Price Waterhouse and Company. Then he moved to CBS and survived the buyouts with Diamandis and Hachette. Fortunately, he says his Ju- daism has never been an issue in the workplace. He admits that he is a workaholic, competitive and has an interest to succeed. "I live and die by my word. If I give my word or shake my hand, I'll go through with it even if it's to my detriment."
