The majority of auto mechan-
ics are honest and ethical.
Most repair shops depend on
repeat business and word-of-
mouth recommendations, so if
they're less than honest or hard
to work with, chances are good
their problems will come back
to haunt them.
There are ways, however, to
separate the best from the rest.
Here are a few tips:
* Look for a national affili-
ation. Affiliation in an organi-
zation such as the National
Institute for Automotive Ser-
vice Excellence usually means
that a shop encourages techni-
cians to become certified
through advanced training and
testing.
* Find a customer-friendly
shop. Even though grease and
grime are part of the business,
a repair shop should be neat
and clean. Personnel should be
presentable, helpful and cour-
teous, and the shop's hours of
operation should suit your
needs.
* Build a relationship on
communication. The best me-
chanics listen when a customer
describes his automotive trou-
bles. Once they've figured
things out, they can explain
your vehicle's problems in easy-
to-understand terms, and clar-
ify when you have a question.
* Target a top shop. A rep-
utable shop will make policies
regarding labor rates, esti-
mates and acceptable methods
of payment clear to you before
work on your car begins. War-
ranties and guarantees should
be clearly mapped out, and cost
and time estimates backed up
with action.
The shop also *should be will-
ing to return old parts to you
upon request.
Even more telling is a shop's
level of customer involvement.
A good shop will allow you to
participate in the repair deci-
sion instead of cornering you.
You should be given several
courses of action.
*Do your part. A good shop
shines when customers play
their part. Describe symptoms.
Carry a written list of troubles
that you can leave with your
mechanic and resist the temp-
tation to suggest a specific
course of repair.
Ask as many questions as
you need, but don't rush for an
on-the-spot diagnosis. Instead,
ask to be called and apprised
of the problem, courses of ac-
tion and costs before the work
begins, and make sure you un-
derstand all shop policies re-
garding labor rates, guarantees
and acceptable methods of pay-
ment before you leave. U
