ewish News subscribers
have a love affair with
automobiles.
A recent survey by
Simmons Market Research Bu-
reau of New York indicates that
Jewish News subscribers oper-
ate an average of four cars per
household; 2.3 vehicles that are
owned and 1.7 that are leased.
Also, the survey suggests these
subscribers will purchase near-
ly $170 million worth of new
cars in the upcoming 12-month
period.
The findings are part of a
larger study performed by Sim-
mons in April-May 1993 among
a randomly selected group of
1,000 Jewish News subscribers.
Sixty percent of those receiving
the six-page mail survey re-
turned it to Simmons, an un-
usually high proportion.
Simmons found that Jewish
News subscribers favor luxu-
ry cars. Thirty percent said
they owned a luxury car, three

j

times higher than the Simmons
national average. Topping the
luxury car list was Cadillac,
owned by 11 percent of Jewish
News subscriber households.
This compares to 3 percent
ownership of Cadillacs nation-
ally, as measured by Simmons.
Lincolns were owned by 7.4 per-
cent of subscriber households,
nearly five times higher than
the Simmons national average.
Simmons also found the Jew-
ish News subscribers were more
likely than the national average
to own these nameplates: Buick,
Chrysler, Mercury, Oldsmobile,
Pontiac, Acura, Audi, BMW,
Honda, Jaguar, Lexus, Mazda,
Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Saab
and Toyota. Also exceeding na-
tional ownership statistics, ac-
cording to Simmons, were:
Chevrolet Corsica, Dodge Dy-
nasty, Eagle Talon, Ford Probe,
Ford Taurus, Plymouth Ac-
claim, Nissan 300 7;K and Sub-
aru Legacy. El

New Design Exhibit
At Local Museum

T

ie philosophy of the
internationally re-
nowned designer Vir-
gil M. Exner Sr.
(1909-1973) is reflected in an
exhibit at Henry Ford Museum.
"The New Shape of Motion:
The Design Career ofVirgil Exn-
er'' includes renderings, drawings
and advertising art that illustrate
Mr. Exner's role in defining the
American family car.
The exhibit offers a brief look
at Mr. Exner's life and work
from an early childhood draw-
ing and high-school notebook
illustrations to designs for con-
cept cars.
Mr. Exner's career began
with art training at Notre
Dame University and a job as
an errand boy for the advertis-
ing agency that promoted
Studebaker. He moved on to
General Motors, where he
quickly became head of the
Pontiac design studio. He left
GM in 1938 to work with the
Raymond Loewy design firm,
dealing primarily with the
Studebaker account.
In 1949, Mr. Exner joined
Chrysler Corp. as head of ad-
vanced styling. His designs in-
cluded a group of 1955

production cars known as the
"Forward Look" line. Mr. Exn-
er continued with Chrysler un-
til 1961 when he formed his
own company, Virgil M. Exner
Inc., specializing in sports car
and power boat design.
In addition to artifacts that
represent these stages in Mr.
Exner's career, museum visi-
tors can see one of the most pop-
ular Exner-designed auto-
mobiles: a 1957 DeSoto Fire-
flute. The vehicle was pur-
chased for the exhibit through
a donation from the Chrysler

Defining the
American car.

Corporation Fund.
The items on display are part
of an extensive collection rep-
resenting the remarkable ca-
reers of Mr. Exner and his son,
Virgil M. Exner Jr. The
younger Exner donated the col-
lection to Henry Ford Museum
and Greenfield Village in 1990.
Admission to the exhibit is
included with Henry Ford Mu-
seum admission. Regular hours
are 9 a.m.— 5 p.m. daily. 1:1
