Eaton Corp., General Electric,
General Dynamics, IBM, Intel
Corp., Microsoft, Teledyne,
among others.

National Semiconductor Re-
search and Development facil-
ity in Herzliya reported sales of
its computer chips and pro-

the past year.
The increase was fueled by
the sale of voice chips, which in-
creased 240 percent. Total sales
for the National Semiconductor
unit came to tens of millions of
dollars, according to a source
close to the company.

Computerized
Credit Inspection

A new computerized service for
businesses to determine the
credit health of prospective
business partners was an-
nounced last week by Business
Data Israel (BDI) and Gold Net.
The service, Red Lights, is to
be used by businesses for mak-
ing real-time credit inspections
on potential business partners
to determine whether to con-
duct business with them.
Red Lights offers informa-
tion from a variety of data
sources such as the court sys-

tern, suppliers, banks, and the
media. It can be used either by
a computer or a facsimile ma-
chine and costs only $5 per use,
following initial hookup charges
of $125, according to Ayal Yan-
nai, a founder of BDI.
Mr. Yannai said one of the
service's main advantages is its
quick speed. Red Lights pro-
vides information within min-
utes compared to other services
which can take up to a week for
the same data. The new project
is a joint venture between BDI
and Gold Net. The system in-
cludes some 20,000 local corn-
panies in its database.
Bezek Gold Net is linked to
the AT&T Easylink Services Al-
liance and provides users with
access to U.S. and European in-
formation services.

Deficit Up To
$2.3 Billion

Israel's deficit in the current ac-
count reached $2.3 billion in the
first nine months of the year, af-
ter remaining balanced during
the same period of the previous
two years, the Central Bureau
of Statistics reported last week.
The sharp deficit resulted
from a rising trade deficit and
shrinking unilateral transfer
payments. The current account
was balanced the two previous
years due to special grants re-
ceived during the period of the
Gulf War.
The current account mea-
sures the status of the country's
trade balance and financial
transfers, including foreign aid
and foreign currency brought
into the country.
During the first nine months
of the year, the trade deficit
soared 24 percent to $5.976 bil-
lion, compared to $4.833 billion
during the same period last
year. ❑
