Orthodox) movements from
budgets meant for the entire
public in various religious
affiliations," the petition
said.
Rabbi Bandel said the
movement had appealed for
the interim set aside out of
fear that the ministry would
jeopardize the funding re-
quest even before the court
ruling by "creating an estab-
lished fact of empty public
coffers which would make
any hearing on allocations
totally irrelevant."
The Conservative
Movement's petition, as well
as the earlier one on behalf
of the Reform Movement,
represents a "new stage for
non-Orthodox movements in
Israel," Rabbi Bandel said.
"We have decided to fight for
our rights and not to take no
for an answer."
Rabbi Bandel said the
Conservative Movement has
another petition pending in
the Supreme Court related
to $150,000 it has sought
unsuccessfully from the Re-
ligious Affairs Ministry
since 1986 for additions to a
synagogue in Beersheba.
A court hearing on this
petition is scheduled for Jan.
26.
The Religious Action
Center also has a petition
pending on behalf of Hebrew
Union College-Jewish In-
stitute of Religion, the
Reform movement's
academic institution, calling
for funding on par with
yeshivot.

Holland
Cuts Payments
Amsterdam (JTA) — The
Dutch Parliament has pass-
ed a measure that will pre-
vent the children of those
who suffered persecution
during World War II from
seeking monthly payments
from the government.
The measure, which was
passed last week, was
enacted at the urging of Cul-
ture and Welfare Minister
Hedy D'Ancona, who stress-
ed the need to cut back on
government expenditures.
Under the terms of the
Law for Payments to Vic-
tims of Persecution, Jews
who suffered under the
Nazis in Holland and those
who suffered at the hands of
the Japanese in the occupied
Dutch East Indies were eli-
gible for the government
payments.
The law was originally in-
tended to help first-
generation victims only. But
in recent years, some chil-
dren of the victims suc-
cessfully claimed payments.
