RUTH UTTMANN STAFF WRITER M ore than 800 women throughout America are expected to head to Detroit in 1996 for a national convention of a major Jewish women's group. The 3,000-member Greater Detroit Section of National Council of Jewish Women has been appointed host for the event, to take place two years from this March. In 1996, 800 delegates are expected. "It's fabulous for this section. What we find is that, no matter where people live, they have the same concerns. It's a wonderful opportunity to share informa- tion and communicate with sis- ters nationwide," said Ann Zousmer, president of the local section of NCJW. Nationally, NCJW has more than 100,000 members. Every three years, the organization sponsors its national conven- tion to create bylaws, resolu- tions and priorities. The last national convention was held in Chicago. Organizers of the 1996 con- vention hope it will take place at the Westin Hotel in down- town Detroit. "It think it would be a won- derful opportunity for NCJW members to meet the new may- or," Ms. Zousmer said. Judy Rosenberg, vice presi- dent of administration and fi- nance, said the local NCJW group already has begun plan- ning for the event. "It's an energizing force for us," she said. ❑ (800) 877-LOAN LIVONIA • ANN ARBOR • TROY • LATHRUP VILLAGE FARMINGTON HILLS • BIRMINGHAM • NOVI • PLYMOUTH No one works harder to deliver the American Dream.'" At least one statue of war- time despot Ion Antonescu has been seen near the capi- tal in recent weeks. During Mr. Antonescu's dictatorial rule, from 1940 to 1944, more than 250,000 Jews died in territories con- trolled by Romania. Mr. Antonescu's precise role in these deaths has been debated for years, but Jew- ish groups agree that An- tonescu, who was executed in Romania as a war criminal in 1946, cared little — if at all — about his coun- try's Jews. "The Jewish population is deeply worried and con- cerned" about the increasing xenophobic and anti-Semitic displays, Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen, president of the Fed- eration of Jewish Corn- munities in Romania, said in a statement. The chairman of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Muse- urn, Miles Lerman, present- ed Jewish concerns to Romanian Ambassador Aurel Munteanu in a meeting last week. Several streets and squares throughout Romania have been dedicated to Mr. Antonescu in recent years, sparking fears among the approx- imately 17,000 Jews in the country that anti-Semitism was on the rise on a wide- spread scale. One statue, erected in the town of Slobozia near Bucharest, is of particular concern because it was fi- nanced by local police and supported by at least one right-wing politician in the Romanian government. Jewish groups have not charged Romanian Presi- dent Ion Iliescu with respon- sibility for the statue, although they would like him to do more to combat an- ti-Semitism. ❑ TAKE AN ADDITIONAL 20% OFF HESLOP'S EVERYDAY Low PRICES c,ustom shirts ON MOST DINNERWARE, CRYSTAL STEMWARE, AND GIFTWARE. mariivn Custom Shirts At Discounted Prices Men's Fashion Coordinator & Shirt Designer For 20 Years 96C-1 235 Heslop's brings you the largest selection of in-stock merchandise in Michigan: Choose from famous names like Atlantis, Block, Dansk, Fitz & Floyd, Gorham; Lenox, Mikasa, Noritake, Oneida, Reed & Barton, Royal Doulton, Royal Worcester, Spode.
