Rabin Blames Syria
For Hezbollah Raids

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin
blamed Syria for not doing
its part to stop Hezbollah at-
tacks on the southern Leb-
/- anon buffer zone and warned
Syria and Lebanon this
week that peace negotia-
tions would suffer as a result
of the continuing attacks on
Israeli and allied troops in
the zone.
Mr. Rabin, who also holds
the post of defense minister,
spoke to reporters while
touring the area after the
Islamic fundamentalist
organization staged two at-
tacks on Israeli and allied
troops in the security zone,
which sits between Israel
and Lebanon.
In retaliation for the at-
tacks, Israeli air force air-
craft staged three bombing
raids on Hezbollah bases
north of the zone, including
one in the evening.
Mr. Rabin said the
"Syrians can reduce (ter-
rorist) activity" in the zone
and "I am convinced they
are not doing this."
"Syrian influence on the
Lebanese government could
lessen tensions in the area,"
the prime minister said.
"But Assad is more inter-
ested in maintaining his au-
thority over the Lebanese
government than in bring-
ing about quiet in the border
area," Mr. Rabin charged.
He also observed that Hez-
bollah, in turn, depends on
the Syrians for its supplies,
which arrives "from Hez-
bollah sources and suppliers
in Iran via Damascus air-
port."
Reports from Lebanon said
two Hezbollah members
were killed in the first raid
and several others wounded.

Hezbollah continued its at-
tacks in the afternoon with
Katyusha rockets fired from
north of the zone at IDF and
SLA positions.
One Israeli soldier suffered
slight injuries to his leg
when Hezbollah forces fired
mortar shells and automatic
fire from north of the zone at
positions of the Israel
Defense Force and its allied
South Lebanon Army.

Court Orders
Teacher Return

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Some
Israeli university teachers
who began a determined,
open-ended strike last week
returned to work after the
Tel Aviv Labor Court issued
a back-to- work order at the
request of students deman-
ding refunds if classes were
not held.
Scheduled classes and
research work were
restarted at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem and
at Tel Aviv University, after
the court ruled that
Treasury officials must
begin serious discussions
with the teachers.
But staff at the Israel In-
stitute of Technology-
Technion in Haifa and Ben-
Gurion University of the
Negev in Beersheba said
they wanted further details
of the promised salary
negotiations before they
would consider returning to
work.
The Tel Aviv Labor Court
order was largely perceived
by striking teachers as per-
taining only to those at Tel
Aviv University. ❑
