A Demonstration

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli
demonstrators of the left and
right faced off in eastern
Jerusalem near the head-
quarters of the Palestinian
negotiators, but a heavy
police presence ensured
there would be no unplea-
sant incidents.
The demonstration by set-
tlers and their supporters,
against what they view as a
prelude to making
Jerusalem capital of a Pales-
tinian state, was permitted
under Supreme Court rules
set after the settlers peti-
tioned for permission to hold
their rally.
The court rules overturned
police rejection of the set-
tlers' request to demonstrate

Palestinian headquarters.
Leaders of the Council of
Jewish Communities in
Judea, Samaria and Gaza,
which sponsored the rally,
said they had no intention of
making trouble. They said
they were demonstrating be-
cause they fear that the
building would soon fly the
flag of the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization.
Palestinian officials had
called the intended demon-
stration a provocation but
said they would not interfere
so long as demonstrators
stayed away from the
building.
The Palestinians' position
was upheld by a group of
Gush Shalom, or Peace Bloc,
activists, who took up sta-
tions in front of Orient
House, vowing to defend it if
the rightists stormed the
building.
Benjamin Netanyahu,
leader of the opposition
Likud party, joined the dem-
onstration for a while, call-
ing on the government to
close down "this PLO head-
quarters in the heart of
Jerusalem." ❑
