Young men and women age 19-
24 are invited to information-
al meetings at the University of
Michigan and Michigan State
University to learn about an ex-
citing 10-month volunteer ser-
vice program in Israel.
Representatives of the Michi-
gan/Israel Connection will dis-
cuss Project Otzma Jan. 18 at
U-M Hillel and Jan. 19 at the
MSU Hillel. Both meetings will
be at 7:30 p.m. In addition, a
Detroit-area meeting will be
scheduled for later in January.
Now in its ninth year, Project
Otzma (Hebrew for strength) is
designed to provide participants
with an opportunity to explore
Israeli life while reinforcing the
bonds between North American
communities and Israel
through volunteer service. It is
coordinated by the Council of
Jewish Federations and the Is-
rael Forum, and administered
locally through the Michigan/Is-
rael Connection.
Beginning in August, the
next group will follow in the
footsteps of some 600 program
alumni, including 12 Detroiters
now in Israel. They will learn
firsthand about Israel's histo-
ry, language, culture and
lifestyle. On their return, they
will fulfill a commitment of ser-
vice to the Detroit Jewish com-
munity.
The Israel component is di-
vided into several tracks. In the
beginning, participants spend
3'/z months on a centrally-lo-
cated kibbutz with an ulpan
course to acquire the funda-
mentals of the Hebrew lan-
guage combined with
integration into all aspects of
kibbutz life. Afterward, they
spend seven weeks tutoring and
working with students from all
over the world at a Youth
Aliyah village, which acts as a
home to immigrant teens and a
boarding school for Israelis. For
another seven weeks, they will
work in absorption (resettle-
ment) centers with Ethiopian
and Russian families.
Three options are available
for the two-month pioneering
track: working with new immi-
grants from the former USSR
and Ethiopia; volunteering on
young kibbutzim in the Arava
Desert or the Galilee; or work-
ing in new industrial sites in de-
veloping areas of the country.
The program will conclude
with a three-month residency
working on community projects
in Detroit's Project Renewal
neighborhood of Neot Shazar in
Yavne. They live in the project
area and work in service pro-
grams, such as assisting in or
