The ZOA president believes
that American Jewry's si-
lence in the face of Arafat's
calculated strategy of sub-
verting the accord to conform
to PLO's hitherto-unchanged
agenda is a disservice to Is-
rael and detrimental to the
peace process.
One is at a loss to under-
stand JTA's motives in choos-
ing a spokesman of the newly
"rehabilitated" Americans for
Peace Now to assess the sig-
nificance of Klein's election to
the ZOA presidency.
"In voting for Mr. Klein,"
pontificated the Peace Now
spokesman, ZOA voted
"against the Israeli-PLO
peace accord" and "elected to
put itself outside the main-
stream ..." Balderdash.

LETTERS page 4

I was sure that when the Clin-
ton administration was ushered
in, there would also be a new
approach to real justice. I am
therefore very disappointed to
see the same old subterfuge still
taking place that was so very
prevalent under the previous
line-up.
Specifically, I am referring
to two news reports coming
out during the last 10 days
relating to Jonathan Pollard.
The first hinted at the possi-
bility that sensational top se-
crets were passed by Pollard
and subsequently fell into the
hands of the Russians.
On Dec. 28, we saw anoth-
er such canard — that Mr.
Pollard tried to smuggle na-
tional security information
out of his jail cell. Does all
this just add up to an attempt
to justify a contemplated de-
nial to the appeals to free
Jonathan Pollard?
For 30 years I waited for a
new dawn in Washington —
please don' disappoint me
now!

`Schindler's List'
And A Critic

Judy Gerstel, the Free Press
movie critic, acclaimed Steven
Spielberg's Schindler's List as
a triumph of cinematic crafts-
manship. Ms. Gerstel tried her
hand also at being a social crit-
ic and a Holocaust scholar.
Ms. Gerstel tells the Holo-
caust survivors that we have
been exploited by Spielberg
who is "making a bid for
artistic respectability by min-
ing the horror, pain and enig-

ma of the Holocaust." She
finds such behavior on the
part of Spielberg "repugnant
if not surprising."
We, the Holocaust sur-
vivors, feel grateful to Spiel-
berg; he succeeded to bring
the message we in our limit-
ed way have tried to convey
for the last 50 years.
It is wicked and arrogant
to accuse Spielberg of por-
traying Amon Goeth, com-
mander of Plaszow
concentration camp, in order
to "exploit the suffering of the
victims." Amon Goeth tor-
tured and shot my father; he
had his dogs kill Mr. Olmer,
the father of my childhood
sweetheart Gina. He also
killed the father of my
boyfriend Heniek Westerdich
and thousands of other men,
women and children.
I could not recreate Amon
Goeth. Steven Spielberg did
it in a masterly way. I do not
feel exploited.
Ms. Gerstel writes "on oc-
casion he (Spielberg) lapses
into vulgar and offensive ma-
nipulation." She supports this
claim by citing a scene where
naked women believe that
they are about to be gassed
but realize that they have
been spared. Ms. Gerstel fails
to mention that this is his-
torical fact and not a product
of Spielberg's "insensitive"
imagination ...

Coalition Seeks
Bosnian Aid

Washington (JTA) — With
winter fast approaching,
Jewish and other organiza-
tions joined to prod the U.S.
government into taking
stronger action to help the

people of Bosnia-Herzego-
vina.

Over the past year, Jewish
groups have been pushing
the Clinton administration
to do more to alleviate the
suffering inflicted on
Bosnia's Muslims by

primarily Serb forces.

More than 40 organiza-
tions participated in a con-
ference, which was designed
to bring together interested
groups to focus government
attention on the crisis.
Representatives of the
Lifeline Network, a human-
itarian group, and the Inter-
national Relief Committee, a
North Carolina- based relief
organization, spearheaded

the effort. Ill
