SHIRLEY BLOOM
IS PROUD and HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE
countries gives a small clue
about the fascinating and di-
verse background of A Taste of
the Orient in Huntington
Woods ... It is on Coolidge and
Lincoln, next to Perry Drugs,
owned by Nina and Barry
Schlussel.
A Taste of the Orient, opened
Dec. 10, 1991, serves carry-out
orders from Korea, Japan, Chi-
na, Viet Nam and Thailand.
Nina, whose parents are Ko-
rean, was born and raised in
Viet Nam ... and learned culi-
nary skills in her mother's
downtown Saigon Korean
restaurant.
As Korean citizens, her fam-
ily escaped on Korean boats in
1975 during a sudden evacua-
tion of U.S. forces.
Nina met Barry two days af-
ter settling in Seoul, South Ko-
rea, at the Non-Commissioned
Officers Club... They were mar-
ried within a year and moved
to the United States.
The cultural and family dif-
ferences brought more person-
al changes for her ... and she
began studying Judaism with
Rabbi Harold Loss at Temple
Israel ... Nina and Barry re-
newed their marital vows as
one of the last religious events
in the old Temple Israel sanc-
tuary on Manderson in Palmer
Park.
Her cooking and manage-
ment skills were sharpened at
several local restaurants ... and
Barry continued to practice law
at his Southfield office.
A Taste of the Orient is strict-
ly carry-out, but has a menu
larger than many ethnic sit-
down restaurants ... 10 appe-
tizers, six soups, seven varieties
of fried rice, five egg foo young
dishes, 14 lo-mein (noodles) fa-
vorites and eight chow mein
and chop suey asked-fors.
The house specialties selec-
tion is extremely extensive with
almost 70 choices, including
some not seen on too many
restaurant menus.
Nina makes her own teriya-
ki sauce as well as other home-
made food features.
But the big thing about Taste
of the Orient is its wide range
from which to choose ... Chef
Paul Lau, formerly of Mon Jin
Lau in Troy, has been with
Nina and Barry since it opened
... assisting in creating one of
the Midwest's most diverse
menus.
BIG SURPRISE of the
evening was that Claudia Pas-
salacqua turned out to be the
culprit.
Almost 60 people attended
the Fourth Annual Mystery
dinner-theatre of Carl's Chop
House on Grand River, picked
their guilty varmint and were
shocked when the finger was
pointed at Frank's pretty wife.
It was the first time the mys-
tery dinner and show had been
held in Carl's Executive Room
... a perfect choice for intimate
fun by the talented comedy
spoofers.
ISRAEL WILL be featured
Feb. 14-20 at the 1994 Inter-
national Cultural Festival, Jan.
17 through March 5, by the
Ritz-Carlton, Dearborn and
Ford Motor Company.
The seven-week celebration
will have wine tastings, cook-
ing classes, children's events,
cameo concert teas, global busi-
ness breakfasts, international
coffee nights and gala Sunday
brunches.
GOOD WAITRESS Dept.
... Brenda Bishop, evenings at
Rialto Cafe, Woodward, south
of Nine Mile in Ferndale ... very
efficient, personable and knowl-
edgeable in the ways of cus-
tomer-pleasing ... In April,
Brenda returns to the club-
house at Hazel Park Raceway,
where she has been a top wait-
person for six years.
Charlie Pappas, by the way,
is back at Rialto ... Good news
... The place wasn't the same
without him ... He is also look-
ing for a spot in the northwest
. preferably Northwestern
Highway ... A lot of folks will be
happy to see Charlie come to
their neck of the woods ... He's
an excellent family dining host
and fine restaurateur with em-
phasis on good many-course
meals at low prices ... Charlie's
Rialto is still one of the very few
places around that refuses to
sell anything but real turkey,
right off the bird.
MAIL DEPT. ... from David
"Clam Shop" Goldfine in Mar-
gate, Florida ... "Just a re-
minder that Rachel and I are
going to be 80 years young in
January and February. It will
also be 55 years of wedded bliss
in February."
THE NEW LOOK at former
Manuel's in Crosswind's Mall,
Orchard Lake Road and Lone
Pine, also includes a new name
and new owner.
When Home Quarters
bought the entire Bloomfield
Town Square on Telegraph, the
only tenant left, Schoopers Tav-
ern and Raw Bar, owned by
Gary Wood, relocated in the
place he had been looking at for
some time ... It has a full menu
and the only thing Mexican now
is the customer who got lost.
CONGRATS ... to brother
Marvin Raskin ... on his birth-
day.
ITALIAN DINNER Buffet
is every Monday evening now
at Roman Terrace II, 12 Mile
and Haggerty ... $9.95 adults
and $5.95 kids under 12 ... It's
Lunch Pasta Bar Buffet, $6.95,
is Mondays through Fridays.
BARRISTER Brian Her-
schfus reminds me that I left
out the name of Judge Barry
Howard's wife ... She's the for-
mer Cindy Burdick. ❑
