Low- er-lactose yogurts have "active cultures" stated on their labels. However, lactose intolerant people should be aware that milk isn't the only culprit. Dr. Perman of Johns Hopkins cau- tioned, "Lactose is found in more products than just dairy products. Milk and milk solids are part of condiments and baked goods. They are also used extensively by pharmaceuticals in prescription drugs." A number of specially treat- ed dairy products developed for the lactose intolerant popula- tion make it possible for them to have their cereal with milk. Most grocery stores now carry lactose-reduced nonfat and low- fat milks that contain 70 per- cent less lactose than regular milk. They have the same amount of calcium and nutri- ents. The only hitch is that these products have a sweeter taste than regular milk because the lactose has already been broken down into glucose and galactose. Many people also use lactase supplements and nonprescrip- tion liquids or pills which, when mixed with milk, can cut its lac- tose level by 70 percent and more.
