they are automatically able to
handle everything that comes
their way. People have been
prepared differently for their
lives. We can only hope that we
help each other in working
through an event that Steven
Spielberg manifests on our
neighborhood movie screens.
We weren't all prepared to face
the demons of the Holocaust at
the same level. Ironically, some
of us have children who have
studied and learned more about
the subject than we have, and
could do a worthy job of teach-
ing us.
But, in viewing "Schindler's
List," all of us have our own is-
sues and sensitivities here.
We're entitled to them. Do we
keep what we feel from our chil-
dren?
As Dr. Last said, perhaps it
is better to offer answers only
to the questions that are asked.
Because unlike one million
children killed in the Holocaust,
our children, with God's help,
will have an opportunity to
learn all that they choose even
about such a subject that serves
as the root of modern-day ter-
ror for our people. ❑

standing and knowledge of oth-
er cultures' roots and heritages
would make us all more toler-
ant of them.
Unfortunately, that is all that
is correct in his letter.
His apologetic view that
Chanukah evolved from "prim-
itive winter celebrations" is no-
tably without source or
reference. In fact, Mr. Egren is
either unaware of, or chose to
ignore, the only documented ac-
count of the origin of Chanukah.
The Talmud (Shabbat 21b) pos-
es the question, "What is
Chanukah?" and recounts the
story of Chanukah as we know
it, with an emphasis on the
rededication of the Temple, and
the miracle of the oil.
The lessons of the story of
Chanukah are every bit as rel-
evant today as they were then.
The triumph of good over evil,
the importance of religious free-
dom, and the dangers of assim-
ilation are all issues we face
today. Rather than reduce
Chanukah to an evolved cul-
tural ritual, we should pay at-
tention to the lives and sacrifices
of its heroes, and the lessons
they taught. This is vital in the
preservation of Jewish life, not
just in improving cultural re-
lations.
