Many of the traditional
Jewish foods contain lactose
and can cause real discom-
fort. These foods that you en-
joyed as a child may be a
pleasure again by taking
Lactaid, a natural dairy di-
gestive supplement that is
kosher. Lactaid is available
in three different forms: Lac-
taid Caplets, Lactaid Drops
and Lactaid Milk.
There's not much you can
do if you want cream cheese
on your bagel except take
Lactaid Caplets before eat-
ing. But you can be aware of,
and perhaps experiment
with recipe alterations, for
the following:
• Rugelach is often made
with dough that contains
sour cream. Try caplets.
• Kugel, the sweet kind, is of-
ten made with cream
cheese, milk, farmer cheese
and/or sour cream. Try
preparing with Lactaid
milk.
• Cheese blintzes are filled
with cheese and topped
with sour cream. Try top-
ping with yogurt.
• Potato latkes are often
served with sour cream.
Try yogurt instead.

pital, medications can some-
times cause temporary lactose
intolerance. For example, an in-
fant being treated for a viral ill-
ness is often put on a
soy-protein formula. If the baby
develops diarrhea, the parents
blame the formula and change
to another. What they don't re-
alize is that it often takes time
for babies to adjust to a new for-
mula and that quick switches
from one to another exacerbate
digestive difficulties.
Another cause of lactose in-
tolerance is a congenital disor-
der in which a person is unable
to produce lactase from birth,
or produces it in very limited
amounts. Dr. Perman of Johns
Hopkins says this disorder is
very rare.
Many people detect for them-
selves that they have a difficult
time digesting milk and milk
products and restrict their diet
accordingly. One simple self-di-
agnosis method is to drink a
couple of glasses of skim milk
in the morning on an empty
stomach, then watch for symp-
toms over the next few hours. If
they occur, lactose deficiency is
probably to blame.
However, lactose intolerance
