RESOLUTION #1 JITI I m going to buy a new Lexus - ,--<)--- were a mix of tourists and Zurichers, all enjoying the chance to glide along a lake on a sunny afternoon. In the dis- tance, we saw sailboats bobbing on the water. As we, too, glided along, we passed elegant lake- side houses, saw other houses hugging the hillsides — and even saw a Swiss train pass on a track close to the water. Every few minutes, we stopped at docks along the lake. Each one had a neatly printed sign announcing the stop and most also had flower pots adorning even the simplest waiting areas: At Erlenbach, bright red and pink flowers lined the entire dock. This is where the boat re- versed direction and headed to- wards the other side of the lake. As we crossed, we savored the view of mountain peaks and blue water. Along the opposite shore, at Thalwil, an entire group of stu- dents carrying their schoolbags got on board. Eating candy, talking animatedly, they were like typical children — any- where — except that most kids don't have the chance to go home from school by boat. As the youngsters chattered Zurich has an extensive network of public transit facilities. in German, the tourists on board enjoyed the local color and the novelty of being on a commuters' cruise. The blue and white trams are another novelty for tourists. The extensive network of trams reaches virtually everywhere in the city; and even though they're sometimes jammed with commuters, they're also quick, clean, totally automated. Besides the novelty, the trams are a useful and inex- pensive way to reach the city's Jewish attractions. For in- stance, the city's distinctive main synagogue with its twin domes, centrally located near the train station, is easily ac- cessible by many tram lines. Three different tram lines stop near Jewish Community Center at Lavarterstrasse. On the day I visited the JCC, I sim- ply hopped aboard a tram along the Bahnhofstrasse and in five minutes I was at Enge, just a few minutes' walk from the JCC. After I toured the JCC and saw its extensive facilities, it was easy to get back to the center of town on the first tram which came along. They do come frequently: I never waited more than five mintues for any tram during five days. ❑ -.--: - 4, 1992 LEXUS ES 300 --', _ voissigi fite ..-, 11 _ - . .
