As the state legislature pre-
pares for a massive overhaul of
the Michigan education system,
Vicki Barnett and State Sen.
Jack Faxon are mounting an
attack on the governor's vision
for schools.
Last summer, the duo
formed a bi-partisan, grass-
roots organization called Citi-
zens Alliance for Responsible
Education, a coalition of edu-
cational professionals, teach-
ers, local government officials
and parents. Its purpose: to
guarantee continued funding
of public education for Michi-
gan residents, and to provide
every public school child with
a high-quality education.
The group is launching a
statewide petition drive to halt
looking forward to serving his customers
and friends at Ceresnie & Offen.

Senate Bill 1— the elimination
of property tax funding for pub-
lic education — from taking ef-
fect if there is no alternative
funding plan.
By April 1, Ms. Barnett, the
11th Congressional District De-
mocratic Party chair, hopes to
have in place 129,000 valid sig-
natures with the Michigan sec-
retary of state. To date, the
group has close to 60,000 sig-
natures.
State legislators in July vot-
ed to slash property taxes pre-
viously earmarked for funding
public education. Several al-
ternative funding plans have
been proposed, but the legisla-
ture is still working on a way
to raise the needed $6.3 billion
to finance public education.
"We are trying to provide a
safety net," Ms. Barnett said.
"The lack of a solid plan to fund
public education shouldn't sup-
pose that creating a catastro-
phe is the first step in finding
a solution." ❑
