Morton Klein of Philadelphia defeated in- cumbent James Schiller in what was described as a close vote. The ZOA has long been one of the most hawkish of the American Zionist organ- izations and is linked to a faction of Israel's Likud par- ty. But following the defeat of former Prime Minister Yit- zhak Shamir, and par- ticularly after the signing in September of the declaration of principles between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, the ZOA lowered its political profile to adhere to the American Jewish mainstream's gen- erally accepted policy of support for the elected government of Israel. Mr. Klein, however, charged that the ZOA failed to be diligent enough in ex- Find It All In The Jewish News Classifieds Call 354-5959 posing how the PLO and Chairman Yassir Arafat violated the declaration of principles. "The people at ZOA thought that by doing that, we would hurt the peace pro- cess," said Mr. Klein after his victory. "I think it would put some pressure on the PLO to abide by the agree- ment they signed." Mr. Klein, an economist and health statistician, first made his mark on the Jew- ish community by protesting anti-Israel biases he discovered in textbooks, travel guides and news- papers. This past year he led an unsuccessful campaign to block the admission of Americans for Peace Now into the Conference of Presi- dents of Major American Jewish Organizations. The ZOA convention, meeting in Washington, also Morton Klein: Defeated the incumbent. elected the entire slate of of- ficers aligned with Mr. Klein. Gary Rubin, ex- ecutive director of the Americans for Peace Now, said that in voting for Mr. Klein and in effect against the Israeli-PLO peace ac- cords, the ZOA "elected to put itself outside the main- stream, which is too bad for the ZOA, but I don't think means too much for Ameri- can Jews." Detroiters named to na- tional posts in the new ad- ministration are Sheryl Silver, national secretary; Sidney Silverman, honorary chairman of the national board; and Anne Gonte Silver, national vice presi- dent. Elected to the national executive committee were Morris D. Baker, James A. Hack, Dr. Jerome S. Kauf- man, - Malcolm Leventen, George Mann. Dr. Leon Warshay and Dr. Lester Zeff. Honorary vice presidents are Leonard Herman, Irving Laker, Dr. Sidney Z. Leib, Louis Panush, Dr. I. Walter Silver and Rabbi M. Robert Syme. f I When the official seal for the United States was being created, a design was sub- mitted by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams depicting the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. The motto of the pro- posed seal read: "Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God."
