CPA, oversees finances; and
Ivan manages the typesetting
and printing operations.
Like their father, the three
sons (and a fourth who is not in
the business) grew up at the let-
terpress shop. Scott was the first
of the current generation to join
the family business, in 1980.
Scott was in his third year at
Michigan State University
when he met his father at a
restaurant in Brighton for an
unusual meeting between a fa-
ther and son - a job interview.
That interview, Mickey ex-
plains, set the pace that allowed
all of his sons to succeed in the
business. Though Scott and the
others were hired by their fa-
ther, he rarely worked directly
for him.
"I know people who try to get
their kids in the business, but
then the children don't listen,"
Mickey Behrmann says. "So
when I hired my sons, they
didn't work for me."
Behrmann customers re-
quest business cards, letter-
heads, envelopes, labels, report
covers, forms, brochures, an-
nouncements, invitations, greet-
ing cards and other creative
pieces.
"It is a fun business," Mickey
Behrman says. "Whether it is
the president of General Motors
or a little store, people love to see
their names in print on a busi-
ness card."
When Jack Behrmann
launched the company, sever-
al other Jewish families in De-
troit also tried their hands at the
printing business. Some, spe-
cialty outfits like Goodwill Print-
ing, are still prospering. Yet as
quick printing chains have sat-
urated the market, and person-

al computer programs and laser
printers have made it easy to
print materials, many of these
businesses have closed.
The secret to remaining com-
petitive, Scott Behrmann says,
is maintaining specialties like
foil stamping and raised letter
printing and getting jobs corn-
pleted in a more timely fashion.
'We used to have two to three
weeks to complete a job," Steve
Behrmann says. "Today, the
printing business has changed.
Things are done more quickly.
So we have upped our turna-
round time. You have to. It is
sink or swim." ❑
