had said in meetings that
the Jews would be allowed to
leave by the end of the year.
The fate of Syria's small,
trapped Jewish community
has received a great deal of
attention here in recent
months, both from govern-
ment officials and from the
American Jewish commun-
ity.
There are now an
estimated 1,350 Jews re-
maining in Syria, most of
whom do not have permits to
leave.
Mr. Specter, who said he
discussed the Syrian Jews
with Assad on three
previous occasions as well,
was part of a congressional
delegation that also included
Sens. Dennis DeConcini, D-
Ariz., Charles Grassley, R-
Iowa, Bob Graham, D-Fla.,
and Rep. Bill Richardson,
R-N.M.

Court Rules
On Right-To-Die

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's
Supreme Court has ruled
that it is sometimes justified
to withhold "extraordinary"
medical treatment from a
terminally ill patient in
order to prevent prolonged
suffering.
But the court also ruled
that deliberately hastening
death is strictly prohibited
by Jewish law.
The decision, which was
reached last week, was ap-
parently the court's first on
the issue, which has nettled
jurists, ethicists and doctors
in many countries.
The ruling came in the
case of Yael Shaeffer, a baby
born in 1986 with Tay-Sachs
disease, a congenital Jewish
genetic disorder.
Two years later, Ms.
Shaeffer's mother petitioned
the court to permit the
hospital to withhold ar-
tificial, life-sustaining
treatment in the event it
became necessary.
Justice Menachem Elon
ruled that the Basic Law on
Human Dignity and
Freedom bars doing harm to
an individual except as it fits
within Israel's "values as a
Jewish and democratic
state."
Judge Elon ruled that Jew-
ish law permits withholding
extraordinary treatment if
the treatment would prolong
suffering, but does not per-
mit any action that would
hasten death.
The court rejected the peti-
tion of the infant's mother
because the infant was not
in pain and because it was
not agreed to by both
parents. ❑
