that was originally played by

said.
Many younger players said
they got involved in mahjongg
because of tradition.
"It's what our mothers did,"
said Ms. Mostyn, who remem-
bers her mother cleaning the
house and putting out "the good
food" on mah-jongg day.
A mah-jongg game would not
be complete without some sort
of food spread. Cuisine varies
from group to group.
Ms. Zupmore says her group
serves anything from fruits,
vegetables and other healthful
food to typical "junk food."
"You don't eat dinner on
mah-jongg night," she said.
Myrna Phillips has been
playing the game for 32 years.
When she comes in from New
York she often plays mahjongg
with Ms. Zupmore.
"The game is still the same,"
Ms. Phillips said. 'When I play

with them, it's like reliving
everything all over again. It re-
minds me of when I first started
playing."
Ms. Mostyn said she noticed
one difference in the way
younger women play. When she
and her friends play mah-jongg,
they "look ahead." Players look
at the tiles before it's their turn.
"Looking ahead gets the
game going faster," Ms. Mostyn
said. "Now all the players don't
want to do that, so their game
is slower. We could play twice
the number of games they
play."
Because a game requires four
players, many groups consist of
five or more women just in case
someone can't play.
"Sometimes when you need
an extra person you get some-
one from another group to come
in and substitute. This game is
so addictive, if you're missing a
player, you scrounge around to
find a sub," Ms. Mostyn said.
