Maloney Attacks
Romania Outrage

Here is one difference between
the United States and the for-
mer communist states of east-
ern Europe: This country erects
memorials to Holocaust victims;
some eastern European nations
honor Holocaust perpetrators.
Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, D-
N.Y., is upset about one exam-
ple of revisionist history. In a
letter to Romanian President
Ion Iliescu, she protested the ap-
pearance of several Romanian
leaders at the dedication of a
statue honoring Ion Antonescu,
that country's fascist leader dur-
ing World War 11 who was re-
sponsible for the deaths of more
than 250,000 Jews.
That ceremony came one day
after Congress approved Most
Favored Nation status for Ro-
mania, a reward for a not-too-
bad human rights record.
In a letter the Anti-Defama-
tion League sent to the Roman-
ian president, it protested "the
growing prevalence of anti-Se-
mitic practices in your country,
of which the erection of statues
to honor one of Adolf Hitler's
earliest and most ardent fellow-
killers of Jews is only the latest
and clearest evidence."

ADL Input On
`Safe Schools'

Next month, Congress will re-
sume its huffing and puffing
over violence in America's
schools. And one Jewish group
is convinced it has something
more than mere rhetoric to of-
fer in the debate.
The "Safe Schools Act," which
will be on the congressional fast
track when lawmakers return
from their winter wanderings,
would provide $175 million over
two years for violence preven-
tion programs, as well as school
programs aimed at alcohol and
drug abuse.
The Anti-Defamation League
(ADL) is working to broaden the
bill so it includes funding for
anti-bias and prejudice reduc-
tion programs.
"We want language that will
institutionalize the notion that
some violence in schools is based
on prejudice," said Michael
Lieberman, associate director
and counsel for ADL's Wash-
ington office. •
Congress seems interested:
In a version of the bill recently
approved by the Senate Labor
and Human Resources Com-
mittee, language suggested by
ADL was included. The group
hopes the House will see things
its way, too. 0
