SUSAN KNOPPOW SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

EXPERIENCED ROLEX

L

ike many of his customers,
Richard Simtob spends a
lot of time in his car.
"We do a ton of driving,"
explains Tyrone Pereira, his
partner in the new venture,
Talking Books, a books-on-tape
rental outlet in West Bloom-
field.
Mr. Simtob and Mr. Pereira
spend more time driving than
most — the Toronto-born pair
commute weekly from London,
Ontario, where they also own
an automotive window tinting
business. On their trips back
and forth, they like to listen to
books on tape.
At first glance, Talking Books
looks like a video store: rows of
white metal shelves under large
blue signs that say "fiction,"
"motivation," "business" and
"classics." Membership is free,
and rentals begin at $2.50 for
five days.

Publishers Weekly's list of au-
dio best-sellers is posted promi-
nently near the front of the
store. New releases come out
on tape as soon as they appear
in print.
Talking Books opened in Oc-
tober. The store stocks 3,000 ti-
tles, and already serves 700
members who come from as far
away as Redford to rent books
on tape.
"Our customers are educat-
ed and busy," Mr. Pereira says.
"They like to read, but don't
have time to read as much as
they want to." He says cus-
tomers complain that the pub-
lic libraries don't offer a wide
enough selection.
Talking Books, on the other
hand, features multiple copies
of best-sellers, along with poet-
ry, business books, children's
stories and the classics.
