Volunteers Are Focus
Of Social Action Day

t often appears the Reform,
Orthodox and Conservative
communities agree upon lit-
tle. However, representa-
tives of all three meet every six
weeks through the Jewish Com-
munity Council's Social Action
Committee Council to get to
know each other, to learn and
to work on community-wide
projects.
On Jan. 9, the committee will
present its second joint activi-
ty, Social Action Day, at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Commu-
nity Center.
Sponsored by the JCCouncil,
JCCenter and The Jewish
News, Social Action Day is an
opportunity for individuals to
learn more about volunteerism
and the various agencies need-
ing help throughout the metro-
Detroit area.
Admission is one can of non-
perishable food.
Nearly 40 agencies, Jewish
and non-Jewish in scope, will
open booths at 1 p.m., offering
information about their goals
and needs.
Keynote speaker, writer, poet
and founder of the Ziv
Tzedakah Fund, Danny Siegel,
will talk to adults at 1:30 p.m.
and youths at 2:30 p.m. about
the importance of performing
mitzvot.
Four workshops will be
available from 2:15 - 4:15 p.m.
on the topics of hunger, home-
lessness, abuse and the envi-
ronment. Each will last 45
minutes and be run by partici-
pating agencies like Yad Ezra,
Haven and the East Michigan
Environmental Action Council.
More than 16,000 fliers an-

nouncing the event were mailed
to members of area congrega-
tions, youth group leaders and
educators.
Beverly Phillips, community
relations associate for the JC-
Council, said the promotional
push was made to encourage
broad participation.
'We hear so often that peo-
ple want to volunteer but don't
know where to go. There is a no-

tion that this (volunteering) is
such a huge time commitment.
But it can be once a week for an
hour, or once a month. It can be
stuffing envelopes, making
phone calls or working hands
on," Ms. Phillips said. "Social
action day is the opportunity to
learn about all sorts of agencies
and opportunities, not only the
large or popular ones."

r. Mark Diem gives not
only of his time and mon-
ey, but his talent.
As a medical doctor, he
has been asked to travel to
Mexico, Guatemala and Viet-
nam to perform his services —
free.
"I'm happy to do it," Dr. Diem
said. "Whenever I find the sit-
uation to help or it finds me, I
go."
To help pass on the message
to his children, Dr. Diem is in-

volved locally, too. Each De-
cember, he and his family make
their way downtown to assist
the Salvation Army — deliver-
ing food, gifts, serving meals.
'It comes down to a question
of 'Why have I been so lucky?'
and What can I do to help those
who probably only by birth are
not so fortunate?' " Dr. Diem
said.
