Dr. Smiley added that it's also as important that students and parents around the coun- try know who is going to be teaching their children. The standard of a Jewishly well-ed- ucated teacher is what, he said, parents now not only want but are demanding from schools such as Hillel and others. His goal is to help principals nationally further and better articulate how Conservative day schools can be more spiri- tual and can be more success- ful in defining Conservative Judaism to their constituencies. Marty Gene, Hillel's presi- dent, concurred with his head- master's goals. "Hillel parents," he said, "are not just looking for the school to guide them as Conservative Jews. The par- ents are more or less demand- ing direction. Dr. Smiley has directed the school to be that guide. It's nice to have young people such as Mark in the community being recognized nationally for the work they are doing." "We know that we can have an impact in the areas of assimilation and intermarriage." Dr. Smiley said parents know now that day schools are important to Jewish survival. But parents also want to know at times why that survival is important, why their children should be educated Jewishly. It's not just about social ac- tion, feeding the hungry, hous- ing the poor, he added. Parents want their children to learn about acts that are sacredly Jewish. "We understand that it's much more relevant now to ex- plain the religious views of Judaism to students and their parents," said Dr. Smiley. "We have 13 teachers studying Torah and learning tefilot on their own. The religious mes- sage of the Conservative day school is no longer cultural, it's spiritual. "Conservative day schools are teaching Torah and tefilot which are God's laws. Parents now as well as children are in- fluenced by Judaism. Con- servative parents are finding that Judaism has a lot to offer to help them lead their lives." Dr. Smiley's goal as presi- dent of the national organiza- tion is for the Schechter schools to create meaningful Jewish ex- periences for their families, in- cluding deeply religious experiences. As president, Dr. Smiley will be based at Hillel, but will trav- el from time to time around the country. Many of the Schechter schools, he said, are experienc- ing growth. Issues of physical space, the education of teach- ers, the upgrading of Judaic studies programs and how big the schools should get are fore- most on the Schechter plate. Continuity is also a major is- sue for the Schechter schools as part of the Conservative move- ment, he said. "We know that we can have an impact in the area of assim- ilation and intermarriage," said Dr. Smiley. "Schechter schools, including Hillel, take that im- pact seriously. "Already, we're seeing many of our students who came through schools such as Hillel taking on teaching and admin- istrative positions in our schools. We're continuing to grow stronger. Our movement demands it. But what's so won- derful now, our parents de- mand it as well." ❑ Palestinian Death Toll Up In Territories Jerusalem (JTA) — The number of Palestinians killed by Israeli security forces in the territories has increased during each of the past three years, according to the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem. From Dec. 8, 1992, to Dec. 8 of this year — the sixth year of the Palestinian uprising, or intifada — 165 Palestinians were killed by members of Israel's security forces. The total is up from 121 in the previous year, and 97 in the year before that. It is lower, however, than the death tolls during the first two years of the intifada. In the first year of the uprising, there were 284 Pa- lestinian deaths, and 300 in the second. B'Tselem also reported that between Sept. 13 of this year, there were 36 Israeli and Palestinian deaths in the terri- tories. ❑
