"Let my people know,"
Rabbi Steinsaltz's favorite
phrase, was repeated
throughout the evening. It is
his personal take of Moses'
call to Pharaoh to "let my
people go."
In this modern instance,
says Rabbi Steinsaltz, it re-
fers to the delivery of the
Russian Jews from religious
oblivion. It also expresses
his desire to educate all Jew-
ish people.
Rabbi Steinsaltz, born a
secular Jew to socialist
parents, has been working
about 25 of his 56 years on
the Talmud. The head of the
Israel Institute of Talmudic
Publications in Jerusalem,
he talks about his yearning
for the unity of the Jewish
people. ❑

have been religiously cut off
from their Jewish religious
roots for most of this cen-
tury.
On Nov. 22, the American
Jewish Joint Distribution
Committee, a sponsor of the
Steinsaltz Yeshiva in
Moscow —officially known
as the Judaic Studies Center
— and a major benefactor of
Jewish education in the
former Soviet Union and
throughout the world,
hosted a reception at the
United Nations in recogni-
tion of Rabbi Steinsaltz's ac-
complishment.
Ambassador Milton Wolf,
president of the JDC, pre-
sented ambassadors Yuli
Vorontsov of Russia and Gad
Yaacobi of Israel with copies
of the first volume of the
work.
The ambassador of Italy,
Francesco Paulo Fulci, an
honored invitee, was unable
to attend.

ister and foreign minister,
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Fishermen
at the port of Ashdod have
complained that peace ac-
tivist Abie Nathan sank his
Voice of Peace floating radio
station in an area that
imperils fishing waters.
Israel's Environment Min-
istry said it would in-
vestigate to determine
whether the ship, which Mr.
Nathan sank Nov. 28, had
been sunk at an authorized
location.
When Mr. Nathan first
announced that he would
stop broadcasting because he
could no longer afford to
maintain the vessel at sea,
he said he had obtained
permission from the au-
thorities to sink it off the Tel
Aviv shore, opposite the site
from which, for more than
two decades.
Mr. Nathan made a last-
minute agreement with then
Tel Aviv Mayor Shlomo
Lahat not to sink the Voice
of Peace, when Mr. Lahat
said he had found a spot on
the Tel Aviv shore where the
ship could be beached and
turned into a museum.
Mr. Nathan accordingly
sailed the ship to Ashdod un-
til suitable arrangements
could be made but ultimate-
ly decided to lay the ship to
rest "gracefully.
