B'nai Moshe
Wins Awards

Congregation B'nai Moshe won
two Solomon Schechter Awards
at the recent United Synagogue
of Conservative Judaism con-
vention in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The Young Couples' Club,
Yachad, won a Gold Award for
Outreach to Young Couples,
and the Social Action Commit-
tee won a Silver Award for So-
cial Action and Community
Relations.
These awards are presented
in recognition of excellence in
congregational programming.

Sherwin Wine of the Birming-
ham Temple will present the
last of three talks on the theme
"Between Orthodoxy and Hu-
manism." He will discuss "Re-
constructionist Judaism In
America."

South African
Election Coming

Johannesburg (JTA) — The
leadership of the South
African Jewish community
has pledged support for the
country's first non-racial
elections, which will take
place next April.
Mervyn Smith, the na-
tional chairman of the South
African Jewish Board of
Deputies, said at a recent
national executive meeting
here, "The board is op-
timistic about a future dem-
ocratic South Africa.
"Our board recognizes the
challenges and difficulties
surrounding the issues, such
as the economy, education
and violence."
"The board is, nonetheless,
hopeful that these issues
will be dealt with successful-
ly•"
Mr. Smith promised that
"the board will encourage
our community to vote for
parties expressing true dem-
ocratic values. It will also
encourage our community to
be involved on all levels of
voter education."
The board represents
South Africa's approximate-
ly 120,000 Jews. There are
also several Jews in leader-
ship positions or serving as
members of the African Na-
tional Cong-ress.
