this season ranked 20th in Di-
vision II.
As a sophomore, Tiomkin set
a school record with 51 points
and he tied another with 20
goals. He tied for ninth in Divi-
sion II in points and he was
10th in goals.
In his freshman year,
Tiomkin led Oakland in assists
(10) and points (22) and he
played the most minutes
(1,852).
"I've scored a lot of goals in
my soccer career, but never at
a rate like this," he said. "While
it's great that I'm scoring so
much, my main objective is to
help Oakland win its first na-
tional champonship."
Oakland coach Gary Par-
sons, who first heard about
Tiomkin through an acquain-
tance in Israel, never saw
Tiomkin play until he put on a
Pioneers' uniform. After scor-
ing just six goals as a freshman,
Tiomkin has been burning the
twine since then.
"Eli is an excellent finisher
up front. That's what he does
best," Parsons said. "He has a
very strong and accurate shot.
We play a more physical game
here than in Israel, but Eli has
been able to adjust to that be-
cause he's so athletic."
Thanks in part to Tiomkin's
efforts, Oakland qualified for
the Division II playoffs this sea-
son for the eighth straight year.
The Pioneers went 14-4-2 and
were ranked No. 7 in Division
II in the final poll.
Tiomkin's hometown is a
suburn of Tel Aviv with a pop-
ulation of about 80,000.
"A lot of the people who live
in Raanana left the big city to
get some peace and quiet,"
Tiomkin said. "It's only about
15 or 20 minutes from Tel Aviv,
so you're not that far if you want
to go there."
Unfortunately, the quiet was
broken early in 1991 during the
Persian Gulf War when two
Scud missies hit Raanana, caus-
ing extensive property damage.
One fell just two miles from the
Tiomkins' apartment.
Tiomkin's father and moth-
er are Yoram and Nava. He has
a sister, Tali, 26, and a brother,
Dan, 17. Yoram is a salesman
and Nava, a former English
teacher for 20 years, is now a
secretary.
"In the United States, people
in the suburbs mostly live in
homes. In Israel, people in the
suburbs mainly live in apart-
ments," Tiomkin said.
Big apartments. The
Tiomkin's, for example, has 5
bedrooms, two bathrooms and
two balconies.
Tiomkin plans to return
home to Raanana this month.
It'll be his third trip back to Is-
rael since he came to Oakland.
Unlike the United States,
soccer is the sport in Israel.

"Kids play it in the street all
the time, and that's the only
thing you see on TV on Satur-
day night," Tiomkin said. ❑
