Paris (JTA) — The Jewish
community_here went to the
polls to vote for half of the
members of the Paris Con-
sistoire, the organization
caring for the community's
religious needs.
Some 31,000 Jews here are
eligible to vote, but only
about 6,800 — or 20 percent
of the community — did so.
In the previous election,
held in 1989, only 10 percent
of the community voted.
The opposition to the cur-
rent leadership of the Paris
Consistoire won this year's
election.
In spite of appeals by
French Chief Rabbi Joseph
Sitruk and other rabbinical
leaders to keep the cam-
paign clean, the opposing
factions largely resorted to
mudslinging and intimida-
tion.

president of the Paris Con-
sistoire, was defeated in the

election. Not one of the can-
didates he supported
managed to win, either.
All seats on the Con-
sistoire went to the slate of
opposition candidates head-
ed by Moise Cohen.
Benny Cohen will remain
president of the Paris Con-
sistoire until the end of the
year, at which time the
organization's governing
board will name his suc-
cessor.
During his tenure as pres-
ident, Benny Cohen infused
a great deal of energy into
the old French institution,
which dates back to the
Napoleonic era.
He was responsible for the
building of synagogues and
ritual baths, but he was also
accused of diverting funds to
subsidize projects that had
remote links to the Jews of
Paris.
One yeshiva was in the
United States, and he also
used funds to build a section
of a road in the administered
territories in Israel.
Benny Cohen was also
vehemently criticized by his
opponents for making deci-
sions within a small inner
circle of loyalists who rarely
gave an account of their
decisions to the governing
board.
