New Tax Laws
Aid Campaign Drive

An Allied Jewish Campaign
cash drive is being mounted to
enable local agencies to serve a
growing number of Detroiters
in need and to help provide es-
sential services to Jews over-
seas and in Israel.
New federal tax laws make
it easier for Detroiters to help
provide services to those in need
by supporting the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign with gifts by Dec.
31.
As Campaign supporters
plan for their 1993 taxes, they
may take advantage of the
changes both to benefit the ef-
fort and to ease the additional
burden created by higher mar-
ginal tax rates.
The recent legislation makes
it more attractive to donate ap-
preciated stocks, real estate
and other assets. While such
items generally were deductible
under the old law, donors might
have been subject to the alter-
native minimum tax (AMT), re-
ducing the value of their
deduction, if the value of the gift
was sizeable and the asset had
appreciated in value dramati-
cally since its original purchase.
Under the new law, donors
may be able to deduct the full
value of the property without
triggering the AMT.
Therefore, all gifts of stock
and real estate now may be de-

ducted at the current market
value of the asset.
The new law also makes
other types of gifts more at-
tractive. Just as the top mar-
ginal estate tax rate was
scheduled to go down, the leg-
islation retroactively increased
it to 55 percent. Charitable es-
tate planning, therefore, con-
tinues to be an attractive option,
since any bequest to the Allied
Jewish Campaign is fully de-
ductible from the gross estate.
For information about mak-
ing payments by Dec. 31 or
other ways of benefiting the
Campaign while taking advan-
tage of the new tax laws, call the
Jewish Federation's Campaign
and/or Endowment offices, 642-
4260.
