Create-A-Book Makes Kids
Part Of The Story

JENNIFER FINER JEWISH NEWS INTERN

n one version of The Big Pa-
rade, Josh Kalisky receives
a call from the mayor of his
town, asking him to lead the
big parade.
In another version of the
book, Janey Gordon receives a
call from the mayor of her town,
asking her to lead the big pa-
rade.
In fact, none of the characters
or settings are the same in any
copy of The Big Parade.
This book, and others like it,
are published by Create-A-
Book, one of more than a dozen
companies that sell personal-
ized books. Most personalized
books incorporate the child's
name, hometown and names of
friends and relatives into the
story.
Sue Kalisky was so im-
pressed with the Create-A-Book
company that she became an
authorized dealer and began
marketing these stories locally.
Ms. Kalisky, one of 650 Cre-
ate-A-Book dealers nationwide,
sells the books at gift shows and
from her West Bloomfield
home. But the bulk of her busi-
ness comes from Sinai Hospi-
tal, where every newborn baby
receives a copy of "Baby's Cre-
ate-A-Book."
The book includes the date
and time of birth, the parents'
names, the weight and length
of the baby, and the delivering
doctor's name. There is also a
version for adopted children and
single mothers.
"It:s a nice memento," said
Rochelle Igrisan, assistant vice
president of perinatal nursing
at Sinai, which orders nearly
4,000 of the personalized books
each year. "Parents really en-
joy this because it's a lifelong
keepsake they can share with
their kids."
Other books available from
the Florida-based Create-A-
Book company include My
School Fun Book, Hanukkah
Story, My Birthday Surprise
and The Sports Book. In all,
there are 16 different titles that
sell for less than $15.
"When I saw this product, I

knew this was made for me,"
said Ms. Kalisky, who was look-
ing for a way to work at home
so she could be with her young
children. "As a former teacher,
I believe being a good reader is
an essential basis for getting a
good education. Combined with
my marketing background, I
saw this as an excellent oppor-
tunity."
Although the business is lu-
crative, it took a while for Ms.
Kalisky to break even because
she was required to buy into the

company. Five years ago, when
she got into the business, she
purchased a computer, the Cre-
ate-A-Book software and oth-
er equipment she needed to put
together the 36-page hardcov-
er books.
"It's been profitable, but it
took longer than I expected,"
said Ms. Kalisky, who is the
company's seventh-best seller.
"You can't just go out and sell
these things. You have to know
how to market the product, too."
Lauren Blitz is a frequent
Create-A-Book customer. She
buys the books for her children
and to give as gifts.
"Kids really get a kick out of
hearing their names and their
family's names in the stories,"
she said. "My kids love reading
Baby's Create-A-Book because
they love hearing about when
they were born. There are so
many different books to associ-
ate with a child's life."
Children aren't the only ones
who get to see their name in
print. Adults often buy the
books for their friends.
"I once sold the fishing book
to a man who was planning to
give it to his fishing partner as
a birthday gift," Ms. Kalisky
said. "By the end of the day, he
came back to buy the book for
all his fishing buddies."
