.ovvJ OR SHARrAt Sc. CELEBRAT; vq, N Ok pounded by the undercurrent of friction between the PLO "in- side" (local Palestinians) and "outside" (Tunis). Slowly but surely, Chairman Arafat has already managed to maneuver many of the more prominent local figures — who were in the forefront of the Washington talks — onto the sidelines. Feisal Husseini, who has been given the "Jerusalem af- fairs portfolio," still weaves in and out of the headlines but has largely been eclipsed, Hanan Ashrawi waits to be posted to Washington and Saeb Erikat is currently without any appoint- ment. In their stead, a stream of new faces — almost exclusive- ly "outsiders" — are manning the current negotiations and may well hold sway in the self- governing authority, as well. In a move seen as a sign of things to come, Ibrahim Mo- Some Palestinians are complaining as much about the PLO as they are about Israel. hane, a senior Gazan police of- ficer who was mooted to head the future Palestinian force, was passed over last week in fa- vor of Gen. Nasser Yusuf of the Fatah's military wing, one of Chairman Arafat's close asso- ciates. Needless to say, since a long list of people are hoping for ap- pointments, the loss of plum jobs to "outsiders" and anything that smacks of crony- ism is sure to be another focus of resentment. Coupled with the deteriorat- ing security situation — and specifically the indulgence with which the Israeli army re- sponded to violence by Jewish settlers while stepping-up its manhunts for Palestinian fugi- tives — the upshot of these de- velopments has been signs of shrinking support for the Is- raeli-Palestinian agreement throughout the territories. Already, the results of a poll by the Nablus-based Palestin- ian Research Center has shown that support for Fatah had de- clined by 4 percent in the past month, while the popularity of Hamas and the two Marxist fronts had risen 12 percent. Fatah still enjoys the largest following in the territories (41 percent), but it does not com- mand a majority, while support for the combined opposition is creeping up toward 30 percent. With Dec. 13 not that far away, the war of nerves has en- tered high gear. ❑ • MAY YOU THIS HANUKAH BE HEALTHY & HAPPY! Warmest Holiday Wishes From .. .
