YEMIN MOSHE page 61

pastels and crayons, and those
of his wife Hanna, who special-
izes in watercolors. "This is my
workshop — and my life!" said
Mr. Dillian, who has exhibited
his art in Israel, the United
States and Europe.
But many tourists get to see
his work right here in his stu-
dio. One of the delights of
Yemin Moshe is the chance to
meet artists like Mr. Dillian
right in their studios. Although
most of the 110 houses in the
quarter are now private resi-
dences, there are also a variety
of artist's studios scattered like
Mr. Dillian's throughout the
area.
"Just walk all around," Mr.
Dillian advised. "You know, in
Jerusalem, you have to get lost
— then you have an adven-
ture."
So I took his advice and in-
deed walked all around, wan-
dering along the stone path-
ways, admiring the flowers, the
houses, the view and passing
more artists' galleries.
Heading back towards the
windmill, I followed a sign that
pointed the way to Mishkenot
Sha'ananim. Translated as
"serene dwellings" and situat-
ed near the landmark windmill
are two guest houses for visit-
ing artists and musicians, as
well as a small hotel and a
restaurant with a panoramic
view.
At the restaurant, I chose a
table on the outdoor terrace to
relax with a cup of coffee and
watch the slowly darkening
walls of the Old City. The
restaurant menu included not
only listings offood but also a
history of Yemin Moshe.
`The new neighborhood was
populated by Ashkenazi and
Sephardic residents who had
previously lived in the densely
populated Jewish quarter of the
Old City," it said. "The creation
of the new neighborhood was,
in effect, the cornerstone of the
new city."

But in 1948, residents were
forced to abandon the neigh-
borhood because of its proxim-
ity to the Jordanian border.
Then it became a lookout point
during the Six Day War.

Then came the rejuvenation
of the area, with artists moving
in. The buildings which are not
Mishkenat Sha'ananim were
renovated and transformed into
a guest house, restaurant and
the Jewish Music Center.
A few minutes walk from
here I found Casals Corner, a
tranquil rock garden named in
honor of the eminent musician.
Then, before I left Yemin
Moshe, I stopped to look a g ain
at the windmill which was just
steps away: It was a reminder
of the origin of this unique quar-
ter and of the man for whom it
is named. ❑
