present our company—not to
just go in, make money and
run. We're in it for the long
run. We're going to help them.
And they like that."
Among the projects Eagle
Bear has completed: a sham-
poo factory in the Central Asian
republic of Tadzhikistan, a
brick manufacturing plant in
Dimitrograd, Russia and sell-
ing Russian made lumber in
Canada. The company is also
developing a project with the
help of Michigan State Uni-
versity called "The American
Farm Center," which will trans-
form communist-style collec-
tive farms into more
productive, privately owned op-
erations. Eagle Bear is pro-
jected to earn $3 million in
fiscal year 1993.
The cultural and business in-
teractions have been an eye-
opener for both men.
"It was a real learning expe-
rience," Mr. Harrington says.
" I knew international business,
but I had to learn Russia.
Michael had to learn corporate
business. The beauty of it is,
Mike understands what it
takes to be successful here.
Plus he maintains a Russian
mentality, so he understands
the way people think over
there."
Mr. Kuchersky says it can be
hard to cut through the well in-
grained communist way of do-
ing things and get his CIS
counterparts to think like
Americans.
For instance, independent
thinking and making decisions
are new and sometimes un-
nerving experiences for many
of his Russian contacts. But
many of them, especially those
who are young, educated and
have had a taste of Western
culture, are eager to learn.
"It's an exciting business. I
look forward to going to work
everyday. It's not just money.
The process is great." ❑

Housing starts in Israel jumped
24 percent in the third quarter,
as the recovery in the building
sector followed the precipitous
drop in activity in the previous
quarter due to the closure of the
territories.
Although building recovered
somewhat, it reached signifi-
cantly lower levels than previ-
ously.
According to Central Bureau
of Statistics figures released
last week, there were 8,940
housing starts in the third
quarter, reflecting a 22 percent
drop from the same period last
year.
Most of the recovery last
