CAPITAL MORTGAGE FUNDING IS A
FANNIE-MAE APPROVED LENDER

You can accuse the good folks
at the Washington Post of many
things, but not, after last Sun-
day, of being pessimists.
As Dec. 13, when Palestini-
ans are slated to take over Gaza
and Jericho, approaches, the
Post's travel section had the per-
spicacity to publish several ar-
ticles about touring the
Mideast: Jerusalem, Oman and
Dubai and — best of all — the
West Bank and Gaza.
David Hoffman, who is based
in the Post's Jerusalem bureau,
asked readers to ignore, for a
moment, the "depressing, for-
bidding images" now coming
out of the Mideast and look
down the road at a future when
travel to Jericho and Gaza will

be safe. "Most interesting" in
Jericho, he wrote, are "old ru-
ins and two old monasteries,"
and there's a "bustling tourist
stop at the Mount of Tempta-
tion Restaurant."
Jericho's a different story: "A
forlorn strip of flat, sandy land
that offers few comforts." Taxi
drivers who "splash through
open sewer lines." "No such
thing as a bed-and-breakfast."
The Palestinian manager of
a tourist agency in Gaza City
was incredulous when Mr. Hoff-
man said he wanted to visit the
strip: "Why? We don't have
roads. We don't have sewage.
We don't have anything, yet.
Today, we have only the
beach..." Li

that mirrored her "own igno-
rance about the... Holocaust."
He also said that Ms. Hess'
"admitted ambivalence about
her own identity as a Jew...
greatly impeded her ability to
review The Holocaust Project."
In the review, Ms. Hess ad-
mitted that "Jewish institutions
make me feel squeamish...I've
never had the desire to explore
my Jewish identity and, yes, my
family has always celebrated
Christmas [with a tree]."
She had nasty words for the
exhibit, yet was kindly toward
Mr. Kuperstein: 'When speak-
ers became emotional" at a din-
ner held to celebrate the show's
opening, "they got a supportive
Kuperstein hug ... He's a ...
mensch."

saiah Kuperstein may be "a
mensch" as far as the Village
Voice is concerned, but he
has no great affection for the
paper's art critic who called him
that.
The former director of the
Zionist Organization of Ameri-
ca's Baltimore office bristled at
a recent Voice review of an art
exhibit, The Holocaust Project,
for which he had been an in-
formal historical adviser. The
project by Judy Chicago and her
husband, Donald Woodman,
debuted last month at the Sper-
tus Museum and College of
Judaica in Chicago.
In an as-yet-unpublished let-
ter to the Voice, Mr. Kuperstein,
now a businessman in Indi-
anapolis, called Elizabeth Hess'
review an "ad hominem attack"
