from local retail
restaurateur to global
mogul is an ongoing
process facing Michael Kuch-
ersky. Mr. Kuchersky arrived
in Detroit from Moscow in
1976, and in the next 14 years,
he built a profitable chain of
short order eateries called "Sun-
rise Cafe".
Now, Mr. Kuchersky, 49, is
out to capitalize on the inter-
national marketplace, by fo-
cusing on his former homeland.

it's an opportunity. I need
somebody who is knowledge-
able enough to present business
as an American," Mr. Kucher-
sky says.
With close to 300 million peo-
ple living in the CIS, a huge,
untapped market for consumer
goods opens. As the former So-
viet republics make the transi-

dard of living. In turn, they can
also buy more foreign products.
Mr. Kuchersky found that
conducting business in the for-
mer Soviet Union is a long-term
investment in itself.
It takes time to develop con-
tacts, to get your bearings.
Much time is invested in not
only developing proposals for
projects, but developing trust
across the cultural lines.
" If an American wants to do
business with them, they are
very glad to do something. In
particular, the Americans," Mr.
Kuchersky says. "They are
willing to take the step, but

Bear Associates, Inc.—a South-
field based project management
and consulting firm.
Eagle Bear's mission is to de-
velop business projects in the
Commonwealth of Independent
States, which comprises Rus-
sia and neighboring republics.
The partners and contract con-
sultants develop contacts there,
scout manufacturing sites, pre-
sent proposals and find the
right industrial resources to ac-

Eagle Bear was created, in
part, out of the fall of commu-

Kuchersky's first obstacle. He
happened to have the office
next door to Mr. Harrington,
who runs his own marketing
firm. Informal talk with an of-
