GAME ROOM SALE Layaway Now For The Holidays Many feel that the cardiologist has not been given full dertails. the cardiologist had not been given full access to details of the rebbe's care or condition, according to Mr. Yanover. "During the two months the aspirin was interrupted, (the) accusation (against Rabbi Groner) is there was a great deal of sabotage going on with Weiss, who had been a chief figure" in the rebbe's medical care since 1977, said Mr. Yanover. Those who side with Rabbi Krinsky say that the doctor "would come in and Groner would say that the rebbe had no time for him now." In an effort to ensure that the rebbe gets the proper medical treatment, a promi- nent and authoritative group of Lubavitcher rabbis decreed, in mid-September, that another individual would be assigned to coor- dinate all contact anyone —including the secretaries — has with the rebbe. A physician was assigned to be the coordinator, and Rabbi Groner and Rabbi Krinsky both reportedly agreed to the new arrange- ment, which dramatically broke from the way things have always been done among the secretaries. But the latest wrinkle, ac- cording to the Krinsky camp, is that Rabbi Groner has tried to subvert the new arrangement by secretly videotaping Rabbi Schneer- son as Rabbi Groner posed a series of questions to the rebbe, said Mr. Yanover. Rabbi Groner has also re- portedly established an in- dependent fund- raising effort named Kupat Rab- benu, or "Our Rabbi's Fund," in an attempt to cir- cumvent 770 Eastern Parkway, the Lubavitch headquarters where Rabbi Krinsky oversees the collec- tion and dispensation of do- nations. ❑ Defense Official Meets Rabin Jerusalem (JTA) — U.S. Defense Undersecretary Frank Wisner has met with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and leaders of the security establishment about U.S.-Israel military cooperation and military challenges in the region. Mr. Wisner is the highest- ranking Pentagon official to visit Israel since the Clinton administration took office. Last week's visit came at a time when the United States is reviewing its defense capabilities with an eye toward possible reductions. Mr. Wisner's visit is being seen here as a gesture of con- tinuing U.S. military sup- port for Israel and was not expected to produce new agreements. It followed Mr. Rabin's meeting in Wash- ington with Defense Secre- tary Les Aspin, who pledged continued cooperation and support. Defense Ministry sources would say only that Mr. Wisner was briefed on "the military situation in the Middle East" and Israel's defense capabilities. Sources also said the threat of Iran and expanding Islamic fundamentalism were discussed. According to recent reports, this month Iran will receive and test North Korea's surface-to-surface Rodong ballistic missile, which has the capacity to strike Israel. ❑ 20% to 50% OFF THE SATURN /FURNITURE .4.1 • 7' 7/8" Slate • 8' 1/8" Slate Up To Various Styles STYLE • Wood Cabinet • Leather Pockets • VA" Framed Slate • Incl. He is be- ing protected by two New York City policemen and his own supporters, observers say. Rabbi Groner first became closely involved in the rebbe's medical care after Rabbi Schneerson had a heart attack on Simchat Torah in 1977. Part of the treatment prescribed by his car- diologist included regular doses of aspirin, which the rebbe took for years until he began having eye problems a few months before his 1992 stroke. Rabbi Groner took the rebbe to see an oph- thalmologist, who suggested that the aspirin intake could be contributing to his eye problems, according to Mr. Yanover. The rebbe's cardiologist, Dr. Ira Weiss, was said to be leery of taking him off the aspirin but agreed to allow it for a week, to see if the oph- thalmologist was right. When the rebbe suffered his massive stroke two mon- ths later, it was discovered that he had not started taking the aspirin again. People in Rabbi Krinsky's camp believe that the stroke likely would not have happened if the rebbe had resumed taking aspirin. What's more, say those siding with Rabbi Krinsky, 123
