EILEEN GOLTZ SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS E very Chanukah, I made out a list of what I want- ed, and every aunt, uncle, grandparent and kid on the block got a copy. Nothing was left to chance and I knew what to expect. As an adult I seem to have somehow lost control. The gifts are getting weirder and weird- er each year. Sometimes I'm even afraid to open the box. The most bizzare gift we ever received for Chanukah was the SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18 1:00PM Holiday Magic with Magician Michael Jacobson. A magical holiday show for the little ones. After the show, all attending adults will have a chance to win holi- day certificates good at any Orchard Mall store through December 24, 1993. Tater Twister. Who invented this? It's a strange kitchen gad- get that no self-respecting gourmet chef can do without (yeah, right). Following closely behind this marvel were the homemade placemats that glowed in the dark. This was topped only by getting the same fish platter from the same peo- ple two years in a row. Why is it that every time someone picks out a gift espe- cially for me I feel like they closed their eyes and threw a dart at a Kmart ad. Just once I'd like to receive something that doesn't have a 90-day war- ranty and be guaranteed to cut my cleaning time in half. I think that I've come up with the perfect idea for gift giving for 5754. My Chanukah pre- sents will all have something to do with food. Everyone gets something personal. I don't have to worry about size, color or "C" batteries. No more guess- ing how much we spent last year or who sent what. I can send presents to all my friends and family and never have to hit the mall. For the younger children, there are dozens of "kids" kosher cookbooks available. For the older teens and college-age students there are several great classics like Modern Kosher Cooking and Aleph Bet Soup by the Solomon Schecter School of Highland Park, Ill. I love get- ting cookbooks; every time I read one I find something new. For my very special friends, I like to bake. A homemade gift of food is a gift of love.
