one point that his son is still
just a kid.
Chess is not child's play
although that is how it all
started for the 6-year-old
Josh. He and his mother
were walking one day by
Washington Square Park,
near the Waitzkins' Green-
wich Village home, when
Josh saw his first magical
kingdom, far afield from
Disney: Castles, queens and
kings moved around a board
in games of "speed-chess,"
three- minute sessions
played for cash.
"I saw all these pieces lin-
ed up," recalls Josh of that
magical moment 10 years
ago. "Everything took off
from there."
What does it take to be a
champion besides talent?
Unerring concentration and
focus. But Josh refuses to be
ruled by the rules and
regulations of this most
complex of board games.
"When I'm in school, I
don't consider myself diff-
erent from others," he says
simply.
That is important to the
teen. "Whoever meets me,
they soon lose their
preconceptions" of what a
chess champion must be
like.
Charming and attractive,
Josh is far from jaded. In
pursuit of grandmaster sta-
tus, he has been unwilling to
lose sight of the grand pic-
ture, as the movie demon-
strates.
"There have been times
when I would get sick of
chess," says the teen. At
those times, he could always
rely on his dad, he says, who
Josh joshes somewhat is his
knight in shining armor.
"My relationship with my
father is about as great a re-
lationship as could be," says
the chess champ.
"He has been as suppor-
tive as he could be. When I
lose, he's there to put his
arm around my shoulder.
And when I win, we
celebrate."
Not that they haven't had
some emotional checkmates
in the past. Disagreements?
"My father and I had some,"
concedes Josh with a smile.
"But when I got sick of
chess, he would always
understand. He was amaz-
ingly supportive."
Fred Waitzkin made book
on his son's success some
years back. Searching for
Bobby Fischer is based on
the same-named book by
Josh's sportswriter father.
It was not a move young
Josh appreciated at first.
"The book came out when I
was younger — 11," says
Josh. ❑
