mopolitan lobby, four restau-
rants and pool and health club,
this was a luxury hotel which
happened to be next-door to an
airport.
And proximity to the airport
did give it some advantages oth-
er hotels don't have. Some
guests enjoy going to the air-
port's Visitors' Terrace for a
view of jet planes; there's also
an organized tour of the airport,
including its small aircraft mu-
seum.
Then, too, for those who want
a kosher meal, the hotel can
easily provide it, using the ser-
vices of Lufthansa German Air-
lines.
In other ways, too, the hotel
seemed geared to the conve-
nience and needs of its travel-
ing guests. The concierge was

ing down the hallway to my
room, I met two women from
South America who immedi-
ately struck up a conversation.
The friendly atmosphere was
a welcome surprise since this is
a huge hotel, with 1050 rooms
on nine floors. "It's the largest
business hotel in Western Eu-
rope," said Mr. Jordi Tarrida,
director of sales. Because
Frankfurt is in the center of Eu-
rope and a major airport hub,
guests are from everywhere.
Diplomats, celebrities, exec-
utives, tourists — all have
stayed here. Last year, the ho-
tel hosted former Secretary of
State James Baker. Recently,
singer Gloria Gaynor was a
guest.
That same cosmopolitan am-
biance was evident at the
Zurich Kloten Airport Hilton
Hotel, where I stayed at the end
of my trip, just before I took a
plane back to the United States.
This time, the hotel was not
right at the airport but a few
minutes away. A free hotel van
transports guests to and from
the gleamingly modern Zurich
airport every 20 minutes.
Situated on a hill in the small
town of Kioten, the 286-room
'=-0 property hardly looked like an
airport hotel, with its beauti-
fully landscaped gardens. The
