Surprising Pleasures
At Airport Hotels

I

t was the day of my depar-
ture from Lyon, France, and
I was all set for my flight to
Kennedy Airport in New
York City. My bags were
packed, my hotel check-out was
completed, and I was plarming
to catch an airport bus for the
40 minute ride to the airport.
To my dismay, when I ar-
rived at the stop, no bus was
there. Valuable minutes were
ticking away. Still no bus. De-
spite my careful planning, I ap-
parently had the wrong
schedule. And a taxi — a much
more expensive option — was
nowhere in sight.
Finally, I found one and
jumped in. In halting French, I

end of the trip. Rather than
finding a strictly business at-
mosphere, I enjoyed the luxury
of a swimming pool, the cozi-
ness of a piano bar, and the cos-
mopolitan ambiance created
when guests are from all over
the world.
First came the pleasure of
conquering jet lag in record
time. Arriving in Frankfurt at
8 a.m. on a Sunday morning af-
ter a seven-hour flight, I felt the
usual disorientation of an over-
seas flight eastward which
hurls me through time zones
and puts my body clock six
hours behind the local time.
So it was a pleasure not to
have to find an airport bus,

urged the driver to be quick. He
was, and I managed not to miss
my plane — but only barely.
That breathless departure
day had one positive result: It
led me to explore a new way to
enjoy hassle-free departure and
arrival days during overseas
travel.
The solution was the airport
hotel. Because it's located right
at the airport, or just a few min-
utes away, there's no worry
about getting to the plane on
time— or arriving jet-lagged in
a foreign city and then having
to get to the center of town,
which is usually some distance
from the airport.
While the convenience of an
airport hotel is obvious, many
people think it's also bland and
impersonal, just a stopover
point between one place and an-
other. But my own experience
proved otherwise.
On a recent trip to Germany
and Switzerland, I stayed at air-
port hotels both at the start and

train or taxi to go into a city that
was totally new to me. Instead,
after I found my baggage, it was
easy to grab a luggage cart, as-
cend two flights on an elevator
and simply walk across a pedes-
trian bridge to the lobby of the
Sheraton Frankfurt hotel.
Within minutes I had
checked in — airport hotels are
ready for early morning check-
ins — and soon after that, I was
in a comfortable room ready for
a few hours of much-needed
sleep.
Then came a swim in the ho-
tel pool. Doing my laps, then re-
laxing in the lounge chairs, I felt
refreshed and free of the jet lag
that often stalks me for days.
There was still time for a
brief exploration of Frankfurt:
There was easy access to the
city from the train station right
at the airport, and it took a
mere 13 minutes on the 5-14
train to get to Frankfurt's Old
City.
