uring the Holocaust, a
Catholic couple agreed
to adopt a young Jew-
ish boy and raise him
as their own. The parents'
only request: that the boy
never forget he was a Jew.
The Jewish couple was
murdered by the Nazis. Their
son, however, survived and
grew up in a loving home
with the Catholic pair who
safeguarded him throughout
the war.
Years later, the Catholic
couple decided it wouldn't be
unfair to have the boy con-
verted to their own religion.
After all, he was now truly
like their own son. They ap-
proached their parish priest
and explained the circum-
stances.
"But did the parents make
any requests about the boy's
faith?" the priest asked.
The couple admitted they
had asked that the boy re-
main Jewish.
"Then I cannot do this con-
version," the priest respond-
ed.
Today, that priest is Pope
John Paul II.
As the leader of milliohs of
Catholics worldwide, the

Pope in many ways sets the
stage for Jewish-Catholic re-
lations. There is probably no
area in which this is more
sensitive than the State of Is-
rael, which the Vatican has
yet to recognize.
Now a new book examines
those relations, why the
Church hasn't recognized Is-
rael and what this means to
the Jewish community.
Catholics, Jews and the
State of Israel (Paulist
Press) was written by theol-
ogy Professor Anthony J.
Kenny. Director of postgrad-
uate studies at the Mel-
bourne (Australia) College of
Divinity, he also is active on
the Council of Christians and
Jews.
Among the subjects Pro-
fessor Kenny tackles are offi-
cial Catholic teaching and the
State of Israel, the problem
of anti-Semitism and "Defin-
ing Jews in Christian Per-
spectives."
He also writes at length of
the church's theological un-
derstanding of the State of Is-
rael and why this so severely
affects Jewish-Catholic talks.

uments relating to the dia-
