you're a Jew. Here is a reward
because you're a good Jewish
kid and you're learning,' " ex-
plained Rabbi Steinman.
Is there anything wrong with
giving gifts?
"I see no problem with gift
giving if you make it modest,"
said Paul Schneider, headmas-
ter of Krieger Schechter Day
School and Superintendent of
Education for Baltimore's
Chizuk Amuno Congregation.
"It's important to let children
feel good and let them look for-
ward to the holiday."
"Chanukah celebrates a tri-
umph over materialism, says
Dr. Smiley. Why not use the
holiday as an opportunity to
teach your children about giv-
ing back?"
Create your own family's
Chanukah tzedakah tradition.
Dr._Cohen requires her chil-
dren to drop coins into tzedakah
boxes before they light the
Chanukah candles. "We also
ask the children to part with
one of their gifts and give it to
charity," she says.
Other ways to encourage
tzedakah are to buy food and
take it to the Yad Ezra. Join
your community's book, toy or
clothing drive. Encourage your
children to pick a favorite char-
ity to send some of their gelt
along with a cover letter listing
their name and age. ❑
