A Sculpture of Love and
Anguish (SPI Books), which
includes numerous photos,
was written by the sculp-
ture's creator, Kenneth Treis-
ter. Some 10 years ago a
group of Holocaust survivors
approached Mr. Treister
about making a memorial
that expressed "a kind of ur-
gency not to forget." It would
have to testify to the full hor-
ror of the Holocaust, but also
celebrate the vanished rich-
ness of the life and culture of
European Jewry.
"The immensity of this
tragedy is infinite," Mr. Treis-
ter writes.
"To express it artistically
is impossible. But I had to
try."
Mr. Treister's sculpture
comprises not only the fa-
mous arm, a number tattooed
on its wrist, but 135 addi-
tional bronze figures who em-
body the Six Million.

and Mitzvah:
A Guided
Journal for Walking the
Mourner's Path Through
Grief to Healing (Jewish
Lights) by Anne Brener.
With 60 guided exercises,
Mourning and Mitzvah
draws on the insight of Jew-
ish mourning traditions as a
source of healing and self-re-
newal.
"Those who follow the
mourner's path and do not
deny the experience of grief
find opportunities for per-
sonal growth and new direc-
tions," says the author, a psy-
chotherapist. "By creatively
exploring the commandments
connected with behavior be-
fore and after a death, I am
for the experience of trans-
formation that is often lost in
a world that does not honor
ritual."
Just as the creation of the
world, the mystics say, took
place in three parts, so the
mourner's path follows these
three phrases, Ms. Brener
says. They include tzimzurn
(contraction), in which the
mourner explores his loss;
shevirat kelirn (the breaking
of dishes) in which readers
confront their broken feelings
and work through the most
intense steps of grief work;
and tikkun (healing), where
mourners learn to transform
their loss into strength. ❑
