Palestinians
To Import

The Israel Energy Ministry has
received a large number of re-
quests from Palestinians inter-
ested in importing petroleum
products into Israel and the ar-
eas under Palestinian self-rule,
Minister Moshe Shahal an-
nounced last week.
According to Mr. Shahal, the
requests have been pouring into
his office since the agreement
in principle with Jordan was
signed, and he does not see any
reason to refuse the offers in
case a full agreement is signed
between the two countries.
The Palestinians want to im-
port the petroleum overland in
tankers. This will bring greater
competition to the market, Mr.
Shohat said.
The ministry is taking steps
to bring competition to the mar-
ket which will help operators
deal with their Palestinian
counterparts. ❑

Unemployment
Hits Natives

Unemployment is affecting na-
tive Israelis more than immi-
grants, government chief
statistician Moshe Sikron said
last week during the release of
the 1993 Statistical Abstract of
Israel.
From the second quarter of
last year until the end of June,
the number of employed per-
sons grew 93,000, while during
the same period this year only
84,000 people joined the work
force, said Mr. Sikron.
Since 1990, 276,000 new jobs
were created, of which 150,000
went to new immigrants. Ac-
cording to Mr. Sikron, the
longer the immigrants live here,
the more likely they are to find
jobs. Only 14 percent of the im-
migrants who came in 1990 are
unemployed, while 32 percent
of those who came last year are
jobless.
In the past year there was a
drop of 10,000 unemployed,
most of whom were immigrants,
said Mr. Sikron. Industry pro-
vided most of the new jobs cre-
ated. 0
