The leopard population has suffered a devastating decline.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The leop-
ard population of the Judean
wilderness along the shores
of the Dead Sea was reduced
by one-quarter by a hit-and-
run Egged bus driver.
Soldiers from a nearby
guard post found the fatally
injured 9-year-old leopard
lying on the road along the
Dead Sea shore near Ein
Gedi.
Veterinarians with the
Nature Reserve Authority
were unable to save the
leopard from the injuries it
sustained when it was hit by
the bus, whose driver who
failed to stop or report the
incident.
The death of the animal,
who was named Amrafel,
reduces to three the number
of leopards inhabiting the
Dead Sea area.
The leopards, which are
tagged with identification
collars that emit a radio fre-
quency, are a popular tourist
attraction in the region.
Amrafel was the son of
Humbaba, an 18-year-old
female leopard that was shot
to death by soldiers touring
the area some months ago.
The soldiers reported that
they had believed they were
in danger from the animal,
which had suddenly ap-

peared a few feet from them.
But Nature Authority
spokesmen said the troops
had been too quick on the
trigger. The aged leopard
was generally known to be
harmless and was used to be-
ing petted by visitors.
The remaining leopards in
the Dead Sea region are two
young males and an aged
female beyond the age of fer-
tility.

Nature reserve specialists
say there is little hope of
success for plans to transfer
to the Dead Sea area a few
leopards from a larger group
living in wild but protected
conditions in a nature
preserve in the southern
Negev.

Topological and other en-
vironmental conditions in
the Negev are greatly diff-
erent from those further nor-
th in the rocky mountain-
sides above the Dead Sea,
and any animals transferred
there might never adjust to
the move, the specialists say.
Leopards were widespread
in Palestine in the biblical
period, but the population
declined to a point of virtual
extinction until groups
began efforts to preserve the
species some years ago. ❑
