was the Bruschetta table with grilled calabrese sourdough bread and assorted toppings . . . caponata, pomodoro, duck liver pate, navy bean and gar- lic, carciofi, etc. Bruschetta is the Italian word or expression for charcoal- grilled bread, garlic-rubbed and drizzled with virgin olive oil . . . a crusty sourdough country bread so delicious with the many garnishes. The grilled portabello mush- rooms with port and roasted garlic were superb . . . as were duck and risotto cakes with porcini mushroom sauce; capellini and shrimp cakes with sun-dried tomato aioli; figs wrapped in prosciutto; melon wrapped in prosciutto; spicy marinated gulf shrimp; mari- nated New Zealand green mus- sels, roasted stuffed quails, fried rock shrimp and three types of very tasty gourmet pizzas. Besides being an astute busi- nessman, Matt is also an ac- complished chef, attending the Culinary Institute of America, and one of the restaurant in- dustry's few who can virtually work any position in the many of his units. Owning 10 sitdown restau- rants among other operations is quite amazing . . . But don't think it came easy . . . even though this man loves to work and loves his work . . . Some would term him a workaholic . .. Others will rightfully say he is just a hard-working, very ded- icated and devoted restaura- teur-entrepreneur. Alicia Prentice, Matt's wife and mother of their four chil- dren, loves and admires him as she looks back at those yester- days when his only restaurant was Deli Unique on Greenfield in Oak Park. She has seen talent after tal- ent exude from her husband . . . and has to wonder . . . what next? BETSY SAX was only 5 years old when she broke into the "entertainment business" . . . Betsy lived four doors away from cousin Bruce Joel Rubin on Tracy, south of Outer Drive . . . He was just 8 years old and the two used to put on shows in the Rubin basement for parents on the block. Bruce would write the plays and Betsy starred in them with him. She went on as Betsy Leemon to become a super sales gal at The Jewish News .. . while Bruce, the son of Jim and the late Sandra Rubin, won an Oscar for his movie screenplay Ghost, with Whoopie Goldberg and Patrick Swayze . . . along with other hits like Brainstorm, Jacob's Ladder, etc. They have a closely-knit fam- ily and Bruce likes to include as many as possible in his film en- deavors . . . My Life with Michael Keaton and Nicole Kid- man, appearing at local the- aters, was written, directed and produced by him . Sandra, in whose memory the picture gives trailer credit, and Jim play an aunt and uncle . . . Also in the film are his Chicago cousin Wendy Sax, Betsy's sister; Bruce's brother and sister-in- law, localites Gary and Suzy Rubin and their two children; plus his wife Blanche and their son Ari . .. Betsy was to be in it, too, but didn't want to take time off work at the paper. He always brings his movies to the hometown first so Bruce's family can see it before the gen- eral public . . . and was here for the new release of My Life .. . he came back shortly after to spend Thanksgiving here with his family. Betsy finally made the films herself at Universal when she attended Ari's bar mitzvah in California . . . even though it was just a home movie. CONGRATS . . . to Rose Shapiro . . . on her birthday . . . to Irene Rodman . . . on her birthday ... to Robert and Andi Lawton . . . on their sixth an- niversary.
